Recent study suggests a link between high-fat diets and lowered sperm count and sperm motility.

While there are many different lifestyle factors that can reduce sperm count, current research has found that high-fat diets show a possible link to lower sperm concentration. A 2012 study was published in Human Reproduction and found that men who were on high-fat diets showed a 43% lower total sperm count and over 35% lower sperm concentration than men who were on a low-fat diet. For this reason, researchers encouraged men to consider their fat consumption when trying to increase their fertility. This falls in line with research reported by Scientific American that showed a correlation between high-fat dietary habits and lowered sperm count.

The good news is that men can take steps to control their diet to reduce fats. By consuming a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables selecting lean meats, fish, or low-fat protein sources, men can increase their overall health and fertility. According to the study, saturated fat seemed to have the most significant effect reducing sperm quality and quantity. Reports showed that every 5% increase in saturated fat reduced sperm count by 38%. By avoiding saturated fats, men can prevent this negative effect. Foods that are high in saturated fat include:

  • Fatty meats including beef, port, and lamb
  • Processed meats
  • Cream and butter
  • Cheese
  • Hydrogenated oils (palm, soy, and coconut oil)

It is important to note that researchers from this study suggest that more research is needed to support the findings since it is among the first if its kind. However, fertility experts from the Association of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) suggest that both men and women who are trying to increase their fertility should select healthy foods such as greens, fresh produce, whole grains, and non-processed foods. Not only do these foods support fertility, but they boost overall health, wellness, immunity, and energy.

In addition to healthy diet choices, there are other ways couples can address infertility issues. The Conception Kit® at-home system is developed to specifically address low sperm count and low sperm motility and does not require prior clinical testing. The Conception Kit® is a prescription fertility treatment that combines timed ovulation and cervical cap insemination technology to maximize the chances of conceiving. It includes 24 ovulation predictors for timing the Luteinizing Hormone Surge (LHSurge) and provides an innovative Conception Cap® to protect and concentrate sperm near the cervix to optimize the opportunity fertilization. The Conception Cap® protects sperm for up to six hours and holds them securely near the cervical opening so the sperm have the best chance of penetrating the cervix to fertilize the egg.

The Conception Kit® at-home system is an ideal first step for couples seeking an early infertility treatment option that is private, accessible, and affordable.
